I worked with a local all-through school, where children represented homes of over 50 languages other than English. The school wanted to engage parents more effectively to increase student outcomes.
Over the course of an academic year, together with the school’s staff, we created a programme of ways to engage parents. The programme included a mix of sessions on areas to do with school life, parenting skills, discussions about common concerns, and fun events. For example, a teacher delivered a talk on how to support children with homework, I delivered a session on why routine and good sleep are fundamental to children’s health, and we ran a cultural food exchange – that was immensely fun!
Parents appreciated the school’s efforts to communicate and involve them within the school community. Parents also appreciated the space and opportunity provided by the school to develop parenting skills and voice common concerns. Parents and teachers also felt that the behaviour of children was improving. Overall, there was an improved sense of listening and community.
Parents are engaged in an activity we created.
